Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship
The Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship (SMFS) is an academic organization which
"promotes the study of the Patristic Age, the Middle Ages, and the Early Modern era from the perspective of gender studies, women's studies, and feminist studies. It actively promotes and supports interdisciplinary exchanges at all levels of higher education across the world. Members represent every continent and every academic discipline within the arts & humanities."〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://smfsweb.org/ )
The role played by SMFS in furthering both medieval feminist scholarship and women scholars has been noted by prominent scholars in the field. For example, the introduction to ''The Oxford Handbook of Women and Gender in Medieval Europe'' places SMFS's development within the larger context of the rise of the study of medieval women in the 1970s and 1980s. Similarly, Diane Watt attests to the relevance of the Society in her ''Medieval Women in their Communities''. In her monograph, ''History Matters: Patriarchy and the Challenge of Feminism'', Judith M. Bennett claims that, as of 2006, SMFS had over a thousand members and provided important online bibliographic resources for feminist scholarship. Some scholars have noted, however, that despite being in existence for almost thirty years, the marginalization of feminist scholarship in a 'post-feminist' age seems to have had a 'knock-on' effect on the Society's broader visibility.
== History ==

SMFS was founded in 1992 as an organization to promote and further communication between feminist medieval scholars. Its origins lay in the ''Medieval Feminist Newsletter'', begun in 1986 by the organization's founders, E. Jane Burns, Roberta (Bonnie) Krueger, Elizabeth Robertson, and Thelma Fenster. It has, since 1999, produced ''Medieval Feminist Forum'', which grew out of the ''Newsletter'', and became an online-only journal in 2009. The organization is affiliated with the MLA and the AHA 〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.historians.org/about-aha-and-membership/affiliated-societies/society-for-medieval-feminist-scholarship )〕 and has sponsored sessions at annual meetings of these societies. SMFS has also sponsored sessions at other major international conferences, including the International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, the International Medieval Congress at the University of Leeds, the Medieval Academy of America, and Australia & New Zealand Association for Medieval & Early Modern Studies (ANZAMEMS).
